Alyse Thompson

Artist Reception May 3, 6:30 - 8:30 PM

Alyse Thompson is a multidisciplinary artist based in Riverton, Utah, whose journey with art began at the age of four under the mentorship of her older brother. From her earliest experiments with oil, oil pastels, and acrylics, Alyse developed a lifelong connection to creative expression. It wasn’t until high school that she discovered watercolor—an experience that earned her an honorable mention and revealed a powerful truth: sometimes the medium chooses the artist.

She pursued her passion academically, earning a BFA in Graphic Design from Weber State University, where she also served as president of the Art Guild and worked at the Shaw Gallery. Her education laid a strong foundation for her work, blending fine art with design in innovative ways.

After college, Alyse stepped into a role as a sign painter for Harmons Grocery in Riverton. There, she learned a new medium—chalk. Though it didn’t come naturally at first, this challenge sparked growth and pushed her to develop a more distinct style, blending her design background with her painter’s intuition. The experience broadened her artistic voice and taught her to embrace evolution in her work.

Alyse’s practice is deeply intuitive. She begins with free writing, doodles, and thumbnail sketches—exploring subconscious thoughts and turning them into visual language. As she works, she allows space for spontaneity, letting the piece guide her as much as she guides it. For Alyse, the process is just as important—if not more so—than the final product. It is in the experimentation, problem-solving, and reflection that she finds the true magic of art.

“Art is meant to evoke thought and feeling,” Alyse says. “If we let it, it can be a powerful tool to open our perception.” Through painting, she has learned more about herself than through any other means. Her work is a continuous journey of discovery, curiosity, and self-awareness.
