Hilarie Heinz
Artist Reception June 7, 6:30 - 8:30 PM
Hilarie first discovered the art of Kintsugi quite serendipitously after being diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2011. The philosophy behind Kintsugi—rooted in Wabi Sabi and its guiding principles that life is inherently incomplete, imperfect, and impermanent—resonated deeply. It marked the beginning of a profound and beautiful healing journey that would intertwine closely with her growing connection to the art form.
In 2017, while expecting her fourth child, Sophie—a baby prayed for over more than a decade—Hilarie experienced a series of small miracles. Tragically, Sophie passed away at just 13 days old. In the fog of devastating grief, Hilarie returned to Kintsugi, this time more intentionally. Over the next several years, she studied and trained in “modern” Kintsugi with an instructor from the Kintsugi Academy.
She had no idea just how deeply this practice would sustain her. When her beloved younger sister Bri passed away in 2023, Kintsugi became more than art—it became survival. Through it, Hilarie found a way to transmute the weight of her pain into something meaningful and beautiful.
“You gotta resurrect the deep pain within you and give it a place to live that’s not within your body. Let it live in art. Let it live in writing. Let it live in music. Let it be devoured by building brighter connections. Your body is not a coffin for pain to be buried in. Put it somewhere else.”
